Rakhmaninov wrote his First Piano Concerto as a young man (1890-91), while studying at the Moscow Conservatoire. In 1917 he revised the work; in particular, he enriched the texture of the piano part and improved the orchestration. Subsequently Rakhmaninov would often perform the Concerto's revised version
